When Marius and I went hiking on Sunday I brought my brand new Canon s100 with me, and I can tell that this baby and I are going to have a long and happy relationship. Of course, it will never quite measure up to my DSLR, but as far as point-and-shoots go? It is fantastic. I’m in love. She’s going to live in my pocket, handbag, backpack, wherever. She will never leave my side. There is something so magical about being able to capture the world exactly how it is that you see it, and I really want to get even better at it.

Would you recommend it to someone who isn’t sure about buying a DSLR? I would like to only buy one camera and I’d like one that isn’t too big (e.g will fit in a normal purse and all) but I’d like it to be a good one so I can actually get better without being (too) hindered by it’s lack of quality either. So in essence – what cameras would you recommend to someone who wants to take pictures but not be a photographer either? :)
Hi Ash, thanks for the comment! I am by no means a camera expert, but I do know that I love the s100 to bits. The quality is immaculate and you have the opportunity to shoot in raw (meaning more options when it comes to editing, if you’re into that sort of thing), and the size is really practical. I carry mine with me nearly all the time :)
The only big drawback as far as I can see is the battery, which doesn’t last long. I’m used to being able to charge my DSLR before I leave for a week-long holiday and not really having to charge it again until I come back, but the s100 would have to be charged every evening or so – it can take roughly 200 photos on each charge.
The good thing about this camera is that the settings are really pretty much the same as on a DSLR, so once you’ve mastered the settings on this one there really isn’t anything holding you back when it comes to using a DSLR. This might also be a drawback though – if you’re not interested in learning about manual settings at all then it wouldn’t make much sense to get the s100 (this is only my opinion, though). Of course, you can always shoot in auto mode, but then you’d probably get just as nice photos from a cheaper camera. It would be a waste of functionality, if that makes sense :)
You could also have a look at digital system cameras – small but with interchangeable lenses – but I’m afraid I don’t have any experience with those. If I were you I’d visit a camera store and get a little bit touchy feely with the different kinds of cameras. Sometimes you don’t really know what’s right for you until you get to try them out a little :)
Good luck!
Thanks so much for such a lengthy reply! I will definitely keep this info with me when I decide :)
Så fine bilder!! Du er flink. Det er kjempepraktisk med små kameraer sånn i hverdagen. Jeg har bare et kompaktkamera, men du og du som jeg elsker det.
Tusen takk Espen! Jeg ble faktisk veldig gledelig overrasket over lille knerten av et kamera – jeg hadde jo hørt at det skulle være bra, men dette var faktisk over all forventning :) Og størrelsen er så praktisk!
I’d love to hike in the snow! :D The last photo is really creepily beautiful…
Your Canon s100 sounds pretty nifty! Love your ultra-detailed explanation-comment btw…it’s almost a blog-post in itself ;) *hints*
Hahaha, thank you! I guess I didn´t consider making a review post because I´m a total nerd. When I buy something I´d rather google detailed reviews, read about sensors and apertures and specs until I turn blue, and then round it all off by watching even nerdier nerds wet themselves from excitement on YouTube. I am aware that not everyone is like me though, I just tend to forget it sometimes. Most people just want a simple, straight-forward roundup. I´m glad my comment was helpful :)
WOW! Even with a point-and-shoot, you take amazing photos. The second and the last ones are definitely my favourites: 2 looking like an angel or a group of nymphs are about to flit through the branches and the last one making me search for doors to holiday villages or a partially decomposed bride ;). Oh Tim Burton.
Loving the new layout!
Thank you so much for the wonderful comment Trajena! I love the new layout as well. There are still a ton of things I need to tweak, adjust and upload, but I am working myself through the to do-list whenever I have some spare time. I will basically be a recluse this weekend because I´d really love to get all the boring stuff out of the way so that I can start uploading things to my portfolio :)
I am so glad someone else mentioned the Tim Burton-ness of the last photo! I love fog, don´t you? :)
There’s something so romantic and dangerous about fog, I’ve always loved it. Unless we’re driving down a country road late at night, in which case it’s not the cool, stylized creepy found in Burton’s stop-motion.
Fy søren så nydelige bilder! :)
Tusen takk skal du ha Mira, det betyr ekstra mye å høre sånt fra en så flink fotograf som deg :)
Wow-ers! For noen nyyyyydelige bilder, Maja!! Jeg får eventyr-feeling!
Tusen takk Siv, for en koselig kommentar! :)
Very nice pictures from Fløien!
Thank you Johanne! I love to take my Sunday walks there :)
